Students in the YPAS Vocal Music program participate in both solo and choral singing. Students take lessons with outside instructors and benefit from Artist-in-Residence vocal coaches and collaborative pianists who come in during the school day to provide enrichment opportunities. Our singers participate in annual recitals, sing two juries a year (just like they will as music majors in college!), and participate in KMEA Solo and Ensemble. Many of our singers pursue opportunities for summer enrichment as well through programs such as the Governor's School for the Arts, Foster Music Camp, Moorhead State Summer Music Camp, Oberlin Summer Vocal Camp, Tanglewood, and Interlochen. The students can also choose to volunteer in the YPAS/WMSFA Vocal Academy program where they teach middle school students some of the things they have learned as solo singers. See below for a few past recital performances. Our individual voice focus is one of the things about our magnet program that is a little different from offerings at other high schools. At YPAS, all singers, regardless of magnet focus are part of this solo voice program.
